You have to love the wonderful culture clash that is NYC. On any weeknight, it’s a veritable collision course of mediums, personalities and styles. This was the energy FAT discovered when he visited the Deitch Projects opening of PUMA and artist Kehinde Wiley’s new collaboration. The Legends of Unity portraits celebrate three of the superstars of African football who will all be wearing PUMA’s Unity Kit at the 2010 World Cup. The gallery also hosted the short film Of the Same Earth, depicting the making of the portraits.
With his trusty Flip in tow, FAT ran down to the SoHo gallery on the afternoon before the opening and spoke to Wiley about the project that seamlessly melds the worlds of sports, art, and fashion. As the Deitch crew finished last-minute preparations, Wiley revealed the personal side of a project that celebrates the über-event that is the World Cup. “You’ll see the global industrial trade of sports, marketing, dreams, desires,” promised Wiley, “but you’ll also see the engagement of art.”
Having already hit Berlin, London, and Paris, Legends of Unity had a 3-day stint at Deitch Projects, and is en route to Beijing and Milan. The exhibition concludes in South Africa in June for World Cup.

This distinctive project presents a new approach to skateboard/artist collaborations by pairing unique examples of Warhol’s groundbreaking artwork with each of the ten iconoclast pro riders sponsored by Alien Workshop.
“We are delighted to see Andy Warhol’s non-conformist spirit embraced by the talented and creative team at Alien Workshop. These pro decks are a testament to the profound influence Warhol continues to have on our culture,” said Michael Hermann, Director of Licensing at The Andy Warhol Foundation.

” L’Homme Qui Marche I (Walking Man 1) – sold within eight minutes for £65 million ($104.3 million). The sale of the Giacometti sculpture set a new world record at Sotheby’s auction”
‘Walking Man I stands as a symbol of humanity always striving, ever seeking’
An undisputed masterpiece of Giacometti’s sculpture, L’Homme qui marche I is also one of the most iconic images of Modern art. It represents the pinnacle of Giacometti’s experimentation with the human form, combining a monumental, imposing size with a rich rendering of the surface. Capturing a transient moment in the figure’s movement, Giacometti created both a humble image of an ordinary man, and a potent symbol of humanity.
3D Rat is ILL. Art Lovers should definitely peep this and get inspired. The film contains new pieces he threw up that are just fresh ! My little brother would love this flick. He’s just beginning his journey as a “Tagger”, says he’s doing it on some legal tag walls in his neighborhood. I don’t know, but this looks iLL.

Making art
My definition of art contains three elements:
1. Art is made by a human being.
2. Art is created to have an impact, to change someone else.
3. Art is a gift. You can sell the souvenir, the canvas, the recording… but the idea itself is free, and the generosity is a critical part of making art.
By my definition, most art has nothing to do with oil paint or marble. Art is what we’re doing when we do our best work.
