AL Davis’ & The Oakland Raiders file grievance against JaMarcus Russell for $9.55 million

The Oakland Raiders have filed a grievance against former quarterback JaMarcus Russell(notes) seeking repayment of $9.55 million, the team confirmed Thursday.

The grievance is based on the contention by the Raiders that the contract was changed at one point during Russell’s three-year stint with the organization and that he’s not allowed to keep all of the money he had collected prior to his May 7 release. Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, was guaranteed $32 million as part of a six-year contract reportedly worth $68 million.

“We have filed a grievance against JaMarcus Russell and that’s all we’re going to say at this time,” Raiders attorney Jeff Birren said.

Part of the guaranteed $32 million was originally in the form of salary advances for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons. A portion of those salaries is in question, according to the grievance.

“The money in question was fully guaranteed. That is why JaMarcus was forced to hold out and miss all of training camp as a rookie,” said Eric Metz, one of Russell’s two agents. “The Raiders know that and this is our only comment.”

Russell will be represented in the grievance by the NFL Players Association.

The clothes O.J. Simpson wore the day he was acquitted of murder in 1995 were rejected by the Smithsonian but will still find a welcoming home in Washington — with the permanent collection of the Newseum.

“It makes perfect sense for us,” said Carrie Christoffersen, the Newseum’s curator of collections. The Simpson verdict was viewed live on TV by millions of people; his photo ran on almost every front page in the United States. Eventually, she said, the clothes could join an exhibit with other trial artifacts — press passes, cartoons, news-gathering technology from that dawn-of-the-Web era. “There’s just no denying this was one of the trials of the century,” she said.

For more than a decade, the tan Armani suit, white shirt and gold tie were at the center of a legal battle between Mike Gilbert, Simpson’s former manager, and Fred Goldman, father of the man Simpson was charged with killing. Goldman later won a civil suit against the ex-NFL pro. The clothes were valuable, if bizarre, bits of memorabilia — among the items Simpson was seeking in the Las Vegas heist-gone-awry that now has him in prison for at least nine years, and ones the Goldman family did not want to see turn a profit for anyone.

When Gilbert and Goldman resolved their differences by agreeing to donate the clothes to a museum, they opened a new quandary: Which museum? The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History quickly rejected the suit last month because it didn’t strongly “represent” the historic moment, officials said, skirting questions of any ewww factor.

Both the Newseum and downtown’s National Museum of Crime and Punishment raised their hands. On Tuesday, the Newseum announced it had prevailed. (Much disappointment at Crime and Punishment, which had lobbied hard for the gift: “This case put forensic science on the map,” said chief operating officer Janine Vaccarello. “It would have been highly educational and informative in our Forensic/Crime Scene Investigation area.”)

Gilbert did not return our calls; he told the Associated Press that he would hand-deliver the outfit next week and that he hopes it “will help people ponder the legal system and celebrity.”

Designed by Aedas Sport, the innovative 75,000-seat stadium will be the first LEED-certified building in the NFL and will capture the luxury and drama of the world’s entertainment capital. The project anticipates completion for the 2013 season. Both the NFL and the client, Majestic Realty, are committed to making a progressive statement with this building and are exploring a number of initiatives that will make this the most environmentally progressive stadium in the U.S. Aedas Sport has employed the unique topography of the site to build the stadium into a hillside, reducing the steel structure by 40% and allowing at least two-thirds of the seating bowl to be built on grade.

A significant coup for the architect, developer and owner, this strategy resulted in an US$800m design — US$400m-$500m less than any other recent NFL stadium proposal. An asymmetrical configuration allows all of the suites and VIP areas to be loaded on the west side of the stadium and integrated into the adjacent retail promenade. While primarily for the NFL, this 365 day-a-year entertainment destination can also accommodate soccer, college and high school football, and large concerts. The stadium powers a retail and entertainment destination, offering flexibility with large, interchangeable sponsorship zones for various audiences. Slated to become the NFL’s first LEED compliant stadium, Aedas’ design includes reduced CO2 emissions, recycling initiatives, and — due to the great reduction of steel in the structure — a significant decrease in hazardous environmental effects associated with material manufacturing and transportation.
