High-end Soho salon Ion Studio is pitching in to aid the cleanup efforts for the oil spill in the Gulf. But instead of going the usual route — say, donating proceeds from weekend blowouts or hosting a Champagne-fueled event — the salon shipped off fifteen pounds of human hair this week. Apparently this is a valid strategy: The hair is shaped into “dreadlock-type mats” that soak up oil. “They make a little mattress, dump it in the water, and it sucks up the oil,” says co-owner Leonardo Manetti. Ion donates anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds of hair every few months through Matter of Trust’s Hair for Oil Spills Program. The organization is now sending 450,000 pounds of hair from salons and pet groomers to the Gulf. By: Lauren Murrow “ION Studio collects all discarded hair for the Hair for Oil Spills Program, which collects hair to make large scale mats to clean up oil spills around the world.

If you wish to recycle your old nylon stockings, we send them to the non-profit organization as well, as they are used to stuff the hair in during mat production. It’s an easy way to do your part in keeping our earth green and beautiful, just bring them in on your next visit.”

As a matter of fact, I know plenty of people, because I went to my meetings and rehab, I quit drugs, I know lots of people addicted to drugs and almost everybody’s been talked out of it. I think the sad part is I have such a distaste for the Lohans that you got remember Elvis Presley made $55 million last year. She’s not done making money if she happens to pass away. And I personally, and this is just my opinion, think these two are vile enough to go, Plan B is, if she passes away, let’s make Lindsay clocks.” -Source

Well, if anybody <del datetime="2010-05-02T09:40:34+00:00">nose</del> knows, Bonaduce does. Lindsay needs help. Sad because she can actually act unlike a lot of the new talent in Hollywood. That <del datetime="2010-05-02T09:40:34+00:00">blows</del> sucks.

By Miles Bennett
It’s Time Kids celebrated its Inaugural event in Los Angeles on Friday (April 23), which rapper/student athlete Romeo hosted alongside his father Master P and a host of other celebrity friends.

It all went down at 61st Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, Calif., where the organization launched a health campaign addressing the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle called “Fatten Our Brains Not Our Bodies”, which Romeo is the national spokesperson for.

“It’s great to see the children so into it. When we asked the kids to get up and exercise with us, they seem very excited,” Romeo said of the launch of the initiative.

The kick off event also drew celebs such as NFL Super bowl Champion Jamal Lewis, Romeo’s sister Cymphonique, Fabulous Girls, Lil King, Mindless Behavior and The College Boyys, all of whom will hop aboard the “Fatten Our Brains Not Our Bodies” national school tour.

Also In attendance was Congresswomen Maxine Waters, who says she “too feels it is important to teach our children about eating right.”

Waters honored both Master P and Romeo with a Certificate of Special Recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives. The Millers produced the “Edutainment” and exercise event for urban school children to empower and inspire students to fight against childhood obesity by committing themselves full to their education, exercising regularly, and practicing healthy eating habits and lifestyles.

“We believe it is necessary to educate children about the importance of eating right, education and exercise,” said P. Miller. “As a unit, we feel the time is now to do this; we truly support what the First Lady is doing with her platform of helping to fight obesity. This is just our way of doing our part.

“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 67 percent of adults are overweight or obese and the epidemic is being spread to our younger generation. In 2001, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry estimated that between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents were obese,” continues Miller. “We have to address this as a country and we will continue this mission with a national tour.”

The initial explosion killed eleven people and injured several others, and a fire burned at the location for more than a day until the damaged oil rig sank. An emergency response effort is underway to stop the flow of oil and contain the existing slick before it reaches wildlife refuges and beaches in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Ciclotte is an exercise bicycle that originates from the demand of a design expressing authentically the contemporary life where work and relax inhabit the same dimension. Thanks to its line, which is the result of an aesthetic innovation inspired by ergonomics and essentiality, Ciclotte can be inserted in the more different living contexts: at home, at the office, in the gym and outdoor. An exercise bicycle dedicated to the wellness lovers living fluid spaces where all the objects can communicate with each other.

The big wheel of Ciclotte is the focus of the project and of the object. The big circle reminding retro bikes of late XIX century is turned into a fine engineer object bound to become a must-have of the interior design and luxury fitness worlds. Ciclotte combines concept, functionality and technology and overturns the traditional aesthetic standards. It breaks the fitness equipment design schemes, which are often linked to the functional aspect.
The carbon handlebar is one of the most characterizing parts; it is symbol of dynamism and solidity at the same time. The saddle is ergonomic, comfortable and adjustable in three directions. The display allows an easy and immediate interaction and choice of the twelve exercise programs.

Planned by the young designer Luca Schieppati from Milan and produced by Lamiflex company, situated in the Bergamo area, with top materials like carbon, steel and fibreglass, it represents the latest in the fitness world thanks to its advanced technology.

A creamy yogurt artisanally made from sheep’s milk in Northern California

by Karen Day on 18 March 2010

Crafted on a small family-run farm in Sonoma County, CA, Bellwether Farms’ creamy sheep milk yogurt makes a tasty and healthy substitute for both standard cow milk varieties and other alternatives. Since the protein in sheep milk more closely matches human breast milk, it’s easier on digestion than cow or even goat milk yogurt.
Bellwether Farms raises their East Friesian sheep (a prolific and lean European breed commonly used to make cheeses such as Manchego, Ricotta, Feta and Pecorino Romano) on natural pasture, grains and sprouts. The resulting naturally homogenized sheep’s milk contains no antibiotics or growth hormones and, thanks to the higher density (about 50% more) solids, the yogurt has a thicker consistency, more calcium, protein and as one of their farmers recently told us, more “better for you fat.”

Those familiar with traditional Greek yogurt (not cow milk versions sold in the U.S.) will recognize the taste of the milk’s make-up, which also lends a natural sweetness to the plain variety Bellwether produces. But, working with an Oregon producer that counts Bellwether as their only food manufacturer client, their deliciously fruity flavors—strawberry, blueberry, blackberry and vanilla—rank high above others who use “fruit preparations” that often list their first ingredient as water.

Bellwether Farms sheep milk yogurt and artisanal cheeses sell stateside at sustainably-minded retailers.

Source

From their website
We call it a revelation in flavor and health.
Our sheep’s milk yogurt is sweeter than goat’s milk, tastier than soy and richer than cow’s milk! Made with naturally homogenized sheep milk, our yogurt contains no antibiotics or growth hormones. For an added benefit, sheep milk could be the answer for those who are lactose intolerant. The highest quality milk deserves the highest quality fruit. We have sourced the best fruit from the Oregon Columbia River area; Blackberry, Blueberry, and Strawberry. Our Vanilla is flavored with a blend of Madagascar, Bourbon and Indonesian beans giving it that beautiful speck of color and richness of flavor. This delicious, naturally thick and creamy yogurt will surprise you with its clean and refreshing taste. Enjoy for breakfast, lunch or even a snack!

Did you know that Bellwether Farms tasty Sheep Milk Yogurt is…
Made from 100% pure sheep milk
Made from milk from healthy, pastured animals and active cultures L.bulfarieus, S. themophilus, L. acidophilus, and Bifidus – all very good for the body’s proper functioning.
Is an excellent source of B vitamins, including B12, as well as calcium and riboflavin.

Available flavors are Blackberry, Strawberry, Blueberry, Vanilla and Plain
The fruit is on the bottom of the cup so be sure and give it a good stir.

Food desert? What’s a food desert?

As part of Lets Move!, the campaign to end childhood obesity, First Lady Michelle Obama is taking on food deserts. These are nutritional wastelands that exist across America in both urban and rural communities where parents and children simply do not have access to a supermarket. Some 23.5 million Americans – including 6.5 million children – currently live in food deserts. Watch the video below and learn what the First Lady is doing to help families in these areas across the country.
